Overview
Learn how ketamine therapy can help veterans with PTSD and depression, including benefits, research, and what to expect from treatment.

Ketamine Therapy for Veterans

Many veterans struggle with depression and trauma long after returning from service. While traditional therapies and medications can help, they don’t work for everyone. Ketamine therapy offers a promising alternative by rapidly improving mood, supporting emotional regulation, and enhancing recovery for veterans living with depression and PTSD.

Understanding PTSD in Veterans

Mental health conditions are highly prevalent in the veteran population. According to recent studies, approximately 14% of male veterans and 24% of female veterans experience PTSD. Many also experience comorbid depression and anxiety.

Veterans typically face repeated exposure to life-threatening events that can overwhelm the nervous system. This includes violence, loss of fellow service members, moral injury (a misalignment between actions and personal values), and sexual trauma.

The outcomes of these events can lead to persistent symptoms, including:

  • Re-experiencing: Flashbacks, intrusive memories, or nightmares
  • Hypervigilance: Heightened alertness and exaggerated emotional responses
  • Avoidance: Withdrawing from social activities or reminders of trauma
  • Negative mood and thoughts: Persistent sadness, shame, or fear
  • Cognitive changes: Difficulty concentrating, making decisions, or remembering details

While traditional treatments—including therapy and medications—can help, many veterans do not achieve full relief. It’s estimated that one-third of antidepressant users don’t respond to medications. Therapy can also take a long time to show results and can be emotionally overwhelming, leading some veterans to discontinue treatment.

How Ketamine Works

Ketamine is a medication with rapid-acting antidepressant and trauma-relief properties. Unlike traditional antidepressants, which often take weeks to work, ketamine can produce measurable improvements within hours to days.

Mechanisms of Action

  1. Promotes Neuroplasticity: Ketamine enhances the brain’s ability to form new neural connections. This can help veterans to break free from rigid patterns of negative thinking and trauma-related fear responses.

  2. Modulates Glutamate Signaling: Ketamine acts on glutamate, a chemical messenger involved in mood regulation and cognition. By increasing glutamate transmission, ketamine encourages synaptic growth and strengthens connections in areas affected by depression and PTSD.
  3. Reduces Amygdala Hyperactivity: The amygdala, the brain’s fear center, is often overactive in PTSD, leading to exaggerated fear responses. Ketamine can decrease amygdala reactivity, helping veterans process traumatic memories without becoming overwhelmed.
  4. Rapid Mood Improvement: Ketamine can quickly lift mood, reduce anxiety, and improve emotional stability, which in turn enhances engagement with therapy and daily life.

Ketamine Therapy at ReYou Life

At ReYou Life, ketamine therapy is provided via intravenous (IV) infusions in a safe and supportive environment. Our approach includes preparation before the session and post-session integration support.

  • Preparation: We provide guidance on what to expect during sessions, helping you feel comfortable and supported. You’ll discuss your intentions for the therapy to support a more meaningful experience.
  • Integration: After each session, we offer structured support to help you process changes in mood, cognition, and emotional responses. We also encourage meeting with an integration therapist or partner therapist in the weeks following your infusion to discuss your progress and how to continue personal development.

Treatment schedules are individualized, with the number and frequency of sessions adjusted according to a patients needs and response to treatment.

Clinical Evidence

Research supports ketamine’s effectiveness for mental health disorders in veterans:

In one clinical trial, veterans with comorbid PTSD and treatment-resistant depression were provided a series of six ketamine infusions. After the final treatment, 80% went into remission from PTSD and 93% from depression, meaning they no longer met the clinical criteria for a patient diagnosis. These outcomes were sustained for around 41 days for PTSD symptoms and 20 days for depression symptoms.

Another study investigated the effects of low doses of ketamine in veterans with PTSD and chronic pain. Participants reported significant decreases in both PTSD and pain measures, which occured within 24 hours of their infusion.

As well as PTSD multiple studies show ketamine has significant, fast-acting benefits for treating mental health disorders that commonly impact veterans, such as depression, anxiety and substance abuse disorders.

Safety Considerations

Ketamine therapy is generally safe when administered under medical supervision. Side effects may include mild dizziness, nausea, increased heart rate, or dissociation during the session, but these typically resolve quickly after treatment.

At ReYou, we provide a thorough screening process to ensure ketamine is appropriate, based on someone’s medical and psychiatric history. We closely monitor patients during infusions to ensure their safety and comfort, and for a period of time afterward to make sure they’re safe to go home.
